Causes of Homelessness
Contrary to typical opinion, people who are, or have been, homeless cannot be stereotyped into one category. Homelessness is a result of a traumatic event ranging from a lack of gainful employment to substance abuse or mental illness. Some major factors resulting in homelessness are:
- lack of education, resulting in lower salaries
- domestic violence situations
- poor financial choices
- mental health issues
- drugs/alcohol use/abuse
- day care affordability
- physical illness of self or dependent
- medical expenses
- legal expenses
- immaturity resulting in bad choices
- transportation difficulties
